Copying and/or Imitating

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” — Charles Caleb Colton

I disagree.  While learning, copying can be somewhat helpful, but that final artistry should be claimed as “inspired by insert name of original artist.”  In my opinion, copying for any other reason (other than as a learning tool) is stealing.

Below is one of my super favorites...and my painterly adaptation of my original photographic image, stressing the importance of light.  When learning and experimenting, it is a good idea to give credit where credit is due.  Some have tried to emulate my style when they shoot a single flower.  Of course it isn’t the same because the situation will always be somewhat different.

That said, I want to thank my teacher, Jack Flynn, watercolorist, who taught me the importance of a good foundation (drawing), values, composition and contrasts.

P.S.   Experimenting can lead you down avenues of adventure—avenues on which you discover yourself.
